A multi-tiered approach to economic development is required to allow District C and the broader city to develop services in each neighborhood, create and attract good jobs, maximize local strengths and better integrate them into the regional economy.
I will encourage and support the outcomes of collaborative efforts developed through an inclusive process by diverse stakeholders. These efforts range in scope from developing grocery stores to supporting existing business and attracting new industry to District C economic corridors.
By defining common objectives, District C can take a leadership position in citywide and regional collaboration supporting increased competitiveness of our port, public belt railroad, ship building and oil & gas industries. I will work diligently with business owners to maintain the viability of small business presence in the economic engines of the hospitality and tourism industries.
My primary goal will be to: bring together public and private sectors creating partnerships and creating jobs.
I will advocate for:
An improved permitting and licensing process to encourage a “business friendly” city and District C
- Implement “common sense” reform and best practices to eliminate unnecessary complications and inefficiency
Work for new investment in and Improvements to our District C economic corridors
- Creating specific action steps for each neighborhood corridor
- Developing a grocery store strategy for each corridor with existing best practice models
- Developing specific partnerships with neighborhoods, specific businesses and development foundations with shared objectives
Increased support for the Cultural economy
- Maximize viability of the “cultural” districts
- Greater inclusion of cultural workers in economic development actions
- Work to support and develop programs which include the preservation crafts and building trades as major economic development opportunities
Increased support of Disadvantaged and Local Businesses
- Mandate comprehensive support and compliance on measures for local businesses and disadvantaged business entities
- Develop strategic outcomes to support bonding cooperatives aimed at giving qualified small and disadvantaged business owners opportunities to bid on and secure large capital projects.
