Many groups in New Orleans have done exceptional work in policy and action plans regarding crime and public safety. An effective strategy must be inclusive of the best ideas and a commitment to the best proven practices. I will ensure involvement of professional and volunteer leaders in our city including but not limited to: New Orleans Police Department, District Attorney’s Office and Criminal & Municipal Court officials, the Metropolitan Crime Commission, the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation and various local reports and recommendations such as the City Council led VERA report.
My primary goal will be to encourage more arrests and convictions of violent felons by reducing time spent processing non-violent misdemeanors by the police, DA and criminal courts.
I will advocate for:
Expanded Municipal Court Jurisdiction
- A greater role in processing non violent crimes and offenders
Creating Online Electronic Crime Records
- Hourly updated crime incident reports to improve transparency and citizen police cooperation
- Will include developing a Real Time Crime Center database
Improved Regional Information Sharing
- To improve tracking and capture of violent offenders
Selection of New Police Chief by a Commission
- Our new chief should be selected by a commission composed of criminal justice professionals, citizens, public safety advocates and elected officials which will make formal recommendations to the mayor after a public interview process
